Perplexity Review
Search-first AI that combines web search with cited answers — the correct tool for research-heavy workflows where "what does the internet actually say about this" matters more than "what does the model reason."
Perplexity at a glance
The RevenueHoop take on Perplexity
Perplexity is the AI for research work. Where Claude and ChatGPT are reasoning-first with search bolted on, Perplexity is search-first with reasoning bolted on. The default flow is "search the web, cite the sources, synthesize the answer" — which is exactly the flow you want for competitive research, market analysis, and "what happened this week" queries. For GTM teams doing genuine research work, Perplexity often produces meaningfully better output than Claude or ChatGPT for those specific queries.
Best for
- Research-heavy workflows (competitive analysis, market research, "what happened")
- GTM teams needing cited answers with source links
- Marketing teams doing content research
- Sales teams researching accounts before calls
- Any team where "the web is the source of truth" is the workflow
When to use it
Use Perplexity when your query is genuinely research — you need current information from the web, cited sources, and a synthesized answer that references what the internet actually says. The Spaces feature (Perplexity's answer to Custom GPTs and Skills) lets you package repeated research workflows.
Perplexity also earns its place as the pre-call research tool for AEs — the "brief me on this account before my discovery call" query fits Perplexity's search-first architecture better than any reasoning-first AI.
When NOT to use it
Skip Perplexity for reasoning-heavy work — Claude Opus 4.7 is meaningfully better for complex analysis, writing, and open-ended thinking. Skip it if your queries don't involve current web information; the search-first architecture is overkill.
For teams that want MCP-connected workflows to internal tools (Fathom, Notion, HubSpot), Claude has the ecosystem Perplexity doesn't yet match.
Pros and cons

- Best-in-class search-first AI experience
- Citations and source links on every answer
- Excellent for current-information queries
- Spaces feature for repeated research workflows
- Fair pricing for individual and team use
- Multi-modal (image, PDF) research support
Cons
- Reasoning quality trails Claude Opus 4.7 for complex work
- No MCP support (yet)
- Weaker for creative writing and open-ended tasks
- Less useful for internal-document work (no MCP-style tool access)
- Ecosystem thinner than ChatGPT's Custom GPTs

The RevenueHoop opinion
Perplexity is the tool we use for research work every day. For "what's happening in the enrichment vendor category this quarter" or "brief me on this prospect before my call," Perplexity produces better output than Claude or ChatGPT — because those queries are genuinely search-first, and Perplexity was built for search-first. Most GTM teams should have a Perplexity subscription alongside their Claude/ChatGPT account. The three tools cover different jobs.
